Improv as Medicine

Hollie Laudal joined Melissa McNulty in an interview which will be aired Wednesday, November 2nd at 9 am MST on 93.5 KNCE Taos and on truetaosradio.com to explore the concept of Improv as Medicine.  Jason Pfeifer, Hollie Laudal, and Irene Loy recently started a business which they call Improv Medicine.  As an interactive improv group, they have performed at Health Conferences, Business Meetings, along with other events.  Hollie also runs an improv class every Wednesday at 6 pm at Metta Theater in El Prado, NM.

Part one of the interview delves into Hollie's transformation from sickness to health and how improv played a large part in that process.  In part two of the interview we go into depth about all of the ways improv is medicine and how it can help us grow within ourselves and in our lives.  Part three discusses Hollie's new book coming out this March -- a Memoir of her time as a hospice chaplain.  It is a fascinating and informative interview that provides us with multiple tools to help foster our mental and emotional growth and wellbeing.

                                                7 Ways Improv is Medicine

1.       Fosters the Balance of expressing and listening (Yin and Yang) and creating your own reality as well as joining another person’s reality.

2.       Supports taking a leap into the unknown, being in flow and presence.

3.       Promotes acting and speaking from the heart.

4.       Requires cooperation- each line builds the other person up- the idea of supporting the whole.

5.       Encourages you to bring your feelings in as medicine and turn them into what you need.

6.       Helps you notice the Gap and to step into that Gap and make choices rather than react.

7.       It bursts the bubble of taking ourselves too seriously.

Updating the Human Operating System

An Alive System is an Information System!!  Let's stop suppressing our body with chemicals and focus on bringing it back online and into its natural rhythm so it can function optimally!

For October 5th's show, I have interviewed Keith Christian, Doctor of Oriental Medicine.  Before meeting Keith, I heard amazing things about the effectiveness of his work.  All I knew going in was that he uses muscle testing to diagnose issues and then fixes them with physical manipulations, acupuncture, nutritional recommendations, and supplements.   I have personally seen Keith 3 times in his practice in the last month and a half and it has made a huge difference in my health and well-being.  Keith's work is unique, inspiring, and effective and goes beyond what I had heard previous to meeting him.  The interview airing on October 5th is full of wisdom and inspiration... It is NOT one to miss!

All of the information below is meant to be a supplement to the radio show which airs October 5th at 9 am MST on 93.5 KNCE as well as on truetaosradio.com.   I hope you will get to tune in for the show!  It's a good one!  If not, stay tuned because in a few months, I will be releasing the It's All Good Podcast and you will be able to download the episode and listen to it as many times as you'd like!

In the interview, Keith talks about the importance of what we eat and put into our bodies.  We are, after all, feeding an alive system made of 90% microbes.  Below are his recommended resources for dietary guidelines and nutrition:

Supplements

Restore’s Benefits

Restore is a new generation, earth-derived supplement that promotes an optimal gut environment. It is not a probiotic. It is not a prebiotic. Rather, it is a carbon rich, alkaline liquid, with lignitederived trace organics and essential trace amino acids. With 70% of the immune system located in the gut, this optimal gut environment leads to great gut health. Restore is the first dietary supplement that delivers a balanced family of  bacterial metabolites to promote a healthy firewall of tight junctions in the gut wall and blood brain barrier. Restore provides the communication network to support the return of biodiversity to the gut ecosystem that supports normal immune function.
The hallmark of Restore is that it is based in science. Our research has shown Restore to be non-toxic and to support the tight junction cells of the gut lining.

Non-toxic

For example, we performed the “gold standard” toxicology study on Restore gut supplement and showed that it is non-toxic on kidney cells even at high doses.

Gut Barrier

Additionally, Restore has been shown both in the laboratory and clinically to help support the functioning of the gut barrier and improve gut health by strengthening tight junction cells. In experiments, toxins like herbicides and gluten have been shown to degrade the gut barrier. Restore has been shown to promote the strengthening of the tight junction gut barrier in small and large gut membrane cells for an optimal gut environment.

Lignite Extract

One of the main elements in Restore is the lignite extract. Lignite comes from decomposed prehistoric matter. As plants decompose, they first form peat, which then turns into humate, then lignite, then leonardite and finally to coal. All of these are rich in carbon. One of the differences between all of these elements is the amount of time and pressure have been applied to them.

Quotations from the show:

Muscle Testing = "is the interaction of mind with matter utilizing quantum events which occur in our neurons."- Timothy Francis

"...we live in a participatory universe in which we--our act of asking questions...participate in teh creation of the observed world...everything, every particle, every field or force, event the space/time continuum itself- derives its functions, its meaning its very existence entirely..from the yes--or--no questions, binary choices...- John Archibald Wheeler

"Our embryological experiences, as well as our childhood experiences are events which are stored as frequencies in our nervous system.  It is important to note that all of our sense organs transduce environmental experiences into electrical frequencies, and it is these frequencies that are perceived by our neurons.  These collected learned frequencies serve as a filter in the future processing of new experiences.  By 'programming' our frequency filter we are in effect determining our fate, since these learned experiences are used in evaluating and responding to future incoming signals.' -Bruce Lipton

"The Patterns scientists observe in nature are intimately connected with patterns of their minds--with their concepts, thoughts, and values.  Hence, the scientific results they obtain and the technological applications they investigate will be conditioned by their frame of mind." -Fritiof Capra

"Be sensitive aware, not sensitive affected" -Keith Christian

Somatics.... The Living Body.

Episode 3 of the It's All Good Radio Hour airs on September 7th on 93.5 KNCE, truetaosradio.com at 9 am MST and covers the topic of Somatics.  Somatics is defined as "The Body as experienced from within".  We spoke with Jonell Mills, a Somatic Educator that uses assisted pandiculation to help teach people how to be responsive rather than reactionary through manipulating and moving their bodies.  She manipulates the body in such a way that the subconscious mind can see what it can do and therefore can give the signal to the conscious mind to tell it that it can make a choice. So, in other words, if someone has been through trauma or has experienced negative holding patterns from repetitive movement, Jonell works with them to release these damaging, negative holding patterns so they can hold and move their bodies at will, as nature intended.  It is all very fascinating and effective!

Let's Get Physical!  Today's show featured Erica Lannon of Taos Massage and Manual Therapy. Erica helped us explore the connection between the muscles and the nervous system and the importance of that connection for our overall physical well-being. We learned about the benefits of Medical Massage and Manual therapy as well as some practices we can utilize on our own to create and maintain optimal wellness.

To Contact Erica for more information or to make an appointment, call 575-779-0268 or email erica@manualtherapytaos.com.

Erica Lannon's 6 Practices for Health and Longevity

1.       Breathe Rhythmically and lengthen the exhale (Meditation is the crown jewel of this practice). This activates the parasympathetic nervous system and helps your body relax and digest.  It is great for getting ready for sleep or to calm anxiety. For a great article on how to do this, go to http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-4386/A-Simple-Breathing-Exercise-to-Calm-Your-Mind-Body.html

2.       Pay Attention to your posture.
When you sit, stand, or walk, your sternum should probably be more forward than it is! (Take a deep breath into your rib cage and bring your shoulderblades down and closer together toward the back of the body to feel this) This helps resolve the very common head-forward hunchback posture. Avoid sitting on your sacrum. Stand with equal weight in both feet. When you walk, the first part of your foot to hit the ground should be your heel.

3.       Stretch, move your body in restorative ways (do yoga, swim, neck/shoulder rolls)
This encourages Lymph and Blood Flow, and breaks up habitual patterns of tension. For the best stretching routines out there see www.stretchingusa.com. The Wharton's Stretch Book by Jim and Phil Wharton offers and efficient explanation and instructions for the Active Isolated Stretching Method.

4.       Drink Plenty of water.  Aching joints and muscle cramps and strains can all occur if the body is dehydrated.  Drinking water can reduce pain in your joints by keeping the cartilage soft and hydrated. This is actually how glucosamine helps reduce joint pain, by aiding in cartilage’s absorption of water.  Avoid drinking out of plastic bottles.

5.       Rest. Allow yourself to recharge. Try to get a good night’s sleep as often as you can.

6.       Explore! Find out what restores you.  Do things that give you a sense of freedom and joy. Be Adventurous!
