Biotecture Planet Earth

July 5th's Show features Alix Henry, President of Biotecture Planet Earth, talking about this fantastic Non-Profit that seeks to expand the use of affordable, sustainable buildings and homes throughout the world as well as educate the public about the architecture, construction and maintenance of those buildings and homes.  The Non-profit has worked with Poor Native Americans that could not afford a good home, with people in Haiti to construct Hurricane resistant buildings, with the Nepalese after the big Earthquake, and more.  For more information about their past and future projects and how you can get involved, click on the website and facebook links below! During the show we also learn the 6 principles that make an Earthship as well as how you can live a bit lighter on the land and work with your surroundings even if you don't live in a sustainable, off grid home.

Don't forget to tune in July 5th at 9 am MST on KNCE, 93.5 Taos, Streaming Live at truetaosradio.com

The 6 Principles of Earthship from Earthship.com

1) Thermal/Solar Heating & Cooling

Earthships maintain comfortable temperatures in any climate. The planet Earth is a thermally stabilizing mass that delivers temperature without wire or pipes. The sun is a nuclear power plant that also delivers without wires or pipes.  Through strategically placing windows and skylights, there is an optimal flow of air that works to cool the building.

2) Solar & Wind Electricity

Earthships produce their own electricity with a prepackaged photovoltaic / wind power system. This energy is stored in batteries and supplied to your electrical outlets. Earthships can have multiple sources of power, all automated, including grid-intertie.

3) Contained Sewage Treatment

Earthships contain use and reuse all household sewage in indoor and outdoor treatment cells resulting in food production and landscaping with no pollution of aquifers. Toilets flush with greywater that does not smell.

4) Building with Natural & Recycled Materials

House as Assemblage of by-products: A sustainable home must make use of indigenous materials, those occurring naturally in the local area.

5) Water Harvesting

Earthships catch water from the sky (rain & snow melt) and use it four times. Water is heated from the sun, biodiesel and/or natural gas. Earthships can have city water as backup. Earthships do not pollute underground water aquifers.

6) Food Production

Earthship wetlands, the planters that hold hundreds of gallons of water from sinks and the shower are a great place for raising some of the fresh produce you’d like to have in the winter, but find expensive or bland tasting from the supermarket.

How you can Live a Bit Lighter with the Land and in Greater Harmony with your Surroundings

Put a tub in the sink when you do your dishes and use that water to water your plants outside.  The plants like the soap and food scrap juice.

Keep your bath or shower water and scoop it out to water your plants either inside or outside.

Pay Attention!!!

Use Natural Light as much as possible.  How do you not have to turn the lights on?

Open your windows and crack the windows in the right way to get optimal air flow when it is hot and keep them closed in the winter.  Can you use thermal blinds on your windows and gain a couple of degrees so you don't have to crank up your heater?  How can you manipulate your space for the least energy usage?
